Khoi Khoi FC, the established adult team within the Hitchin Sunday football league, hosted a ‘night at the races’ event on Saturday 22 April 2023.

Held at the Khoi Khoi Clubhouse at the Diamond Industrial Centre in Letchworth, Herts, the race night raising funds for the adults team, the recently announced under 10’s team and also very kindly, ‘For Men To Talk’.

The horse racing night is effectively a small scale lottery where 8 horse races are shown on a television. Each race featured 8 horses with one of them obviously winning. Before each race the audience purchased ‘betting tickets’ for their chosen horse costing £1 per ticket.

“Mental health is close to the team,” said a Khoi Khoi FC spokesperson. “As a team we always tell the players to reach out to groups like ‘For Men To Talk’, so having the founder, Luke Newman, at the Race night highlighted what is available to them, if or when they need it.”

The club raised £227.74 for ‘For Men To Talk’, which encourages men suffering with anxiety, depression and grief to talk with other fellow sufferers.

“In regards to footballers, the intense pressure to perform, constant scrutiny and demanding schedules can take a toll on their well-being”, said Luke. “Football players face high expectations from fans, coaches and even themselves, which can lead to stress, anxiety and depression. I can’t thank Khoi Khoi FC enough for supporting ‘For Men To Talk’ and highlight what we can offer to their players.

‘For Men To Talk’ currently host physical meetings at The Crown Hotel, Weatherspoon in Biggleswade, The Roundabout Club in Sandy, St Neots Golf Club, Gamlingay Eco Hub, The Produce Hall in Stockport, weekly virtual meetings via Zoom and a monthly walking event in Biggleswade.

They will also be shortly launching ‘For Men To Talk… and Fish’ and a weekly ‘For Men To Talk… and Walk’ in Bedford.
