Walking 14 Miles for Men’s Mental Health: London Luton Airport Fire Service & ‘For Men To Talk’ Unite

On 21 November 2025, firefighters from the London Luton Airport Fire Service will take on a powerful challenge. In partnership with the men’s mental health community interest company ‘For Men To Talk’, they will walk 14 miles around the airport while wearing full Breathing Apparatus. This isn’t just a physical test—it’s a symbolic journey.
The 14 miles represent the 14 men who die by suicide every day in the UK. The heavy breathing apparatus represents the weight that many men carry in silence when they are struggling with their mental health.
This event aims to spark conversations, raise awareness, and encourage men everywhere to reach out and talk before their silent burden becomes overwhelming.
Why This Challenge Matters
For many men, opening up about emotions can feel impossible. They may feel they need to be strong, calm, and in control. But the weight of stress, grief, depression, or anxiety can become too much if they face it alone.
Luke Newman, founder of ‘For Men To Talk’, says: “When men talk, they find strength. When men stay silent, the weight becomes heavier. Our mission is to show every man that they don’t have to carry that weight alone.” — Luke Newman
For Luke, the group is more than meetings—it’s a lifeline. ‘For Men To Talk’ provides a safe, relaxed environment for men to speak openly, at their own pace, about anything affecting their mental health. There are no rules, no referrals, and no pressure. Men can share as much or as little as they feel comfortable with.
Conversations often cover everyday challenges—work, family, anxiety, depression, relationships, grief—and everything in between.
Who Is Taking Part?
The London Luton Airport Fire Service is a skilled Rescue and Fire Fighting Service. They are trained to deal with aviation emergencies and provide medical assistance to airport staff and passengers. The team sees difficult and stressful situations regularly, and they understand the importance of mental health support within high-pressure roles.
Matt Johnson from LLA Fire Service shared: “Thanks to Luke and LLA for being so supportive in organising what will be a brilliant event.”
The walk will circle London Luton Airport, located just 1.7 miles east of Luton’s town centre. Luton is the fourth-busiest airport serving London, meaning thousands of people will witness their message on the day of the event.
