Kenya 2027: For Men To Talk’ CEO Returns – Could You Join the Journey?

General News, Kenya, News & Events

In May 2027, ‘For Men To Talk’ CEO Luke Newman will return to Kenya for his twelfth humanitarian trip, supporting schools and children in one of the poorest suburbs of Nakuru.

Every visit is an opportunity to make a real difference. Luke will work alongside local teachers, help improve teaching methods and the school curriculum, support the school’s feeding programme, help build new classrooms and much more. Most importantly, he will spend time with hundreds of children who simply want to learn, play and have the chance of a brighter future.

Luke has been fortunate to take part in this life-changing project for many years, and he is now inviting others to consider joining the 2027 trip.

Luke Newman, CEO of ‘For Men To Talk’, said: “Every visit to Kenya reminds me how much a little time, kindness and hard work can change lives. It isn’t just the children and schools that benefit – every volunteer comes home with a new perspective. If you’ve ever thought about doing something that truly makes a difference, I’d encourage you to come along.”

The project is organised through Rams in Kenya, an initiative led by Derby County Community Trust. Since 2012, an incredible 736 volunteers have travelled to Kenya to support local communities. The programme continues to grow, with more than 80 volunteers taking part in both 2023 and 2026.

Kenya is a beautiful country, but many communities continue to face significant challenges. Around 51% of urban residents live in slum areas, 69% of people do not have access to safe sanitation, and 37% do not have basic drinking water. The support provided by volunteers helps schools create better learning environments for children who deserve every opportunity to succeed.

Volunteers can choose from a range of roles depending on their interests and experience. Some help teachers deliver lessons and sports sessions for children aged 3 to 17, while others assist with construction projects, including building classrooms, kitchens and toilet facilities, or renovating existing buildings. No specialist experience is required, as local tradespeople lead the building work.

The experience offers much more than volunteering. It is a chance to experience a different culture, make lifelong friendships, build confidence, develop new skills and gain a fresh perspective on life. Many volunteers describe the trip as one of the most rewarding experiences they have ever had.

Each year, Luke raises just under £3,000. This helps fund his place on the trip and provides direct support to the school in Kenya. A small contribution also supports Derby County Community Trust’s Harrison’s Hub, helping programmes that benefit more than 3,000 local people every year. These include men’s peer support, chronic pain support, dementia activities, retirement groups, neurological support, community meals and other initiatives that reduce loneliness and improve wellbeing.

If you’re interested in finding out more, an Information Evening will be held on Thursday 16 July 2026, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at Pride Park Stadium and even an option to join online.

There are two travel options available:

  • Two-week trip: 22 May – 6 June 2027 (£2,975)
  • One-week trip: 29 May – 6 June 2027 (£2,425)

If you’ve ever wanted to use your time to help others while experiencing something unforgettable, this could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
