Supporting our heroes: SSAFA’s commitment to the Armed Forces community

General News, News & Events

In a world where heroes often wear uniforms and face unimaginable challenges, it’s crucial that they have a strong support system when they transition to civilian life. Soldiers’, Sailors’ & Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA) is an organisation that has been standing by the side of those who serve in the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force, along with their families, for over a century. Recently, For Men To Talk, men’s peer support group, had a conversation with Martin Bell from SSAFA to discuss the critical role of this organisation in supporting our heroes.

Martin confirmed that trained volunteers can provide practical and emotional support if and when someone needs it, so help and advice are close at hand.

It is often the little things that makes the most difference, but they are also experienced in dealing with complex problems. Martin gave some information on the ways that SSAFA can help:

Housing Advice: Practical housing advice and support to Armed Forces  veterans and their dependants, including guidance around housing benefits and accessing social housing.

Derby advice: After leaving the Forces, some veterans find themselves in financial trouble. SSAFA can give you the support you need.

Help with mobility: SSAFA can help veterans to maintain mobility and independence at hime including obtaining mobility scooters and stairlifts.

Buying household goods: SSAFA can help you get hold of essential items, including white and brown goods.

Homelessness: A significant number of veterans find themselves on the streets, so SSAFA have developed specialist services to support them.

Support for offenders and ex-offenders: SSAFA are committed to supporting serving personnel and veterans in custody, and their families, no matter how their circumstances might have changed.

Residential housing: SSAFA offer places to stay, for veterans and their dependants.

Helped with the loss of a loved one: If you lose someone who has previously service in our Armed Forces, or you are ex-Forces and have lost someone, then SSAFA is committed to giving you support.

SSAFA’s dedication to supporting our heroes, both during and after their service, is nothing short of inspiring. As a society, it’s our collective responsibility to ensure that our service members and their families receive the care and support they need. SSAFA’s commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by service leavers is a shining example of how we can stand by those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our nation. By supporting organisations like SSAFA, we can honour the sacrifices of our armed forces and help them thrive in the civilian world they’ve served so selflessly. It’s time to join hands and ensure that no hero is ever left behind.
