Becoming a ‘For Men To Talk’ Facilitator

General News, Service User

‘For Men To Talk’ is a Community Interest Company. A non-charitable limited company, which is a benefit to the community. It is a mens peer support group.

Formed in December 2019 by Luke Newman, he could see the need for providing a space for men suffering with anxiety, depression and grief to talk with other fellow sufferers.

Having originally launched meetings in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, ‘For Men To Talk’ would like to launch in other villages, towns or cities throughout the country. The question is would YOU like to become a ‘For Men To Talk’ facilitator? But before you say yes, there are some questions that you need to ask yourself to see if you are personally ready.

Having good mental health is important for anyone, but more importantly as a peer support facilitator. It is important for a peer support facilitator to be able to manage their own emotions and thoughts in order to effectively support others. This means being able to recognise and manage any personal triggers and having healthy coping mechanisms in place.

However, It is important to note that having personal experience with mental health issues is not necessarily a requirement for being a peer support facilitator. Many peer support facilitators have lived experience with a certain condition or issue, but not all do. What is most important is that a peer support facilitator is able to understand, empathise and provide effective support to others.

To be a successful ‘For Men To Talk’ facilitator, it is important to have the following mindset:

  1. Empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of others is essential in providing support to those who are going through difficult times.
  2. Active listening: Being able to truly listen and understand what a man is saying is crucial in providing effective support.
  3. Non-judgmental: It’s important to approach each man with an open mind and without judgement.
  4. Patience: Providing support can be a slow process and it’s important to be patient and not rush things.
  5. Empowerment: Helping others to find their own strengths and solutions, rather than solving their problems for them.
  6. Self-awareness: Understanding your own limits and boundaries and being able to take care of yourself while providing support to others.
  7. Confidentiality and Trust: it’s important to maintain confidentiality and build trust with the men you support.
