Angling Trust Funding helps ‘For Men To Talk…and Fish’ Grow

General News, News & Events

‘For Men To Talk…and Fish’ has received funding from the Angling Trust Get Fishing Fund, helping more men enjoy time outdoors, learn new skills, and build friendships through fishing.

Part of the wider ‘For Men To Talk’ brand, ‘For Men To Talk…and Fish’ is built around a simple idea: it is about time together, not tough conversations. Fishing provides a relaxed environment where men can spend time with others, enjoy nature, and connect without any pressure.

The first ‘For Men To Talk…and Fish’ meeting took place on 8 July 2023. Since then, the group has welcomed men of different ages and backgrounds who share an interest in fishing or simply want to try something new.

The funding from the Angling Trust Get Fishing Fund has allowed ‘For Men To Talk’ to purchase fishing equipment that can be provided to regular fishermen attending the sessions. The equipment includes hooks, rod rests, bait boxes, fishing shot dispensers, disgorgers, tackle and rig boxes, rods and reels, landing nets and handles, folding chairs, rucksacks, and fishing feeder moulds.

This equipment will help remove barriers for men who may not have access to their own fishing gear and will encourage more people to take part in future sessions.

Luke Newman, CEO of ‘For Men To Talk’, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Angling Trust Get Fishing Fund for supporting ‘For Men To Talk…and Fish’. Fishing brings men together in a natural and relaxed setting, helping them build friendships, learn new skills and spend quality time outdoors. This funding will make a real difference to the men who attend and help us continue growing the project.”

The impact of the fishing group can already be seen through the positive feedback from attendees.

One fisherman said: “I can say I have never been fishing before and took my son fishing last week passing on the skills I have learnt with other attendees over the past couple of years. The kit will be used wisely.”

Another attendee said: “Amazing time. Thanks again for the fishing kit, definitely going to take my sons out and do some bonding.”

These comments highlight how the benefits of the group extend beyond the fishing sessions themselves. Men are gaining confidence, learning practical skills, and creating opportunities to spend meaningful time with family members.

While fishing is one way that ‘For Men To Talk’ supports men, it is only part of the wider range of activities available. The organisation also offers physical meetings, virtual meetings, walking groups, and social gatherings, giving men different ways to connect and find support.

In addition, ‘For Men To Talk about Autism’ provides a dedicated space for autistic men, men with autistic family members, or those waiting for a diagnosis. The group offers a safe and inclusive environment where people can share experiences and connect with others.

‘For Men To Talk’ will also shortly launch the ‘For Men To Talk Shed’, a hands-on and creative workshop environment designed to give men opportunities to engage in therapeutic practical activities while building confidence and community.
