For Men To Talk launches ‘Must Ask To Engage (MATE)’ Campaign

Do you think that your friend is going through a difficult time? Do you want to offer them a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen? You want to send them a text, but don’t know what to say? Well ‘For Men To Talk’ has launched their ‘Must Ask To Engage (MATE)’ Campaign.
Do you know that as human beings we are biologically made for social contact? Some people organically need people around them, others might choose to be alone and live happily without much companionship.
We all feel lonely at times and we know that you don’t have to be on your own to feel lonely. You might feel lonely within a relation ship or within a friendship or family environment. You may feel that those people don’t understand you or even don’t care about you.
Feeling lonely can have a negative impact on your mental health, especially if these feelings have lasted for some time. Research suggests that loneliness is associated with an increased risk of certain mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, sleep problems and increased stress.
Depression is sometimes referred to as a silent killer. It’s more than just sadness or having a bad day. It can be so crippling that, as a mental health illness, it can stop you living a normal life and lead into isolation.
This could mean that someone close to you is struggling with their mental health and you may not know it. They may just be waiting for a text from someone and that someone could be you!
The ‘For Men To Talk Must Ask To Engage (MATE)’ campaign will show example text messages on how you can reach out to your family or friends. Every Friday for the whole of 2023, social media posts will show effective ways that that you are ready to listen to the receiver, whether that’s straight away or whenever they are ready.
Although it’s important not to be persistent, so that you family member or friend don’t feel pressured to reply, the text messages will show a genuine willingness to listen. It’s a pragmatic and formidable way to take action when you are concerned about someone and encouraging them to talk about their feelings rather than suffering alone in that potentially dangerous silence.
