‘For Men To Talk’ on course to help more men thanks to St.Neots Golf Club

General News, Sport, St Neots

A Cambridgeshire golf club has raised a huge amount for a local mens mental health peer support group as part of their Captain’s Fundraisers for 2022.

St.Neots Golf Club, handed over a cheque for £3630.20 to Luke Newman, founder of ‘For Men To Talk’. The group encourages men suffering with anxiety, depression and grief to talk with other fellow sufferers.

Founded in 1890, the 18 hole course, par 70 (6087 yards), was Cambridgeshire’s first established Golf Club designed by seven time Major winner Harry Vardon.

Scott Taylor, Captain of St.Neots Golf Club for 2022, organised a Captain’s Day on Sunday 14 August, as well as other fundraising events to raise vital funds for ‘For Men To Talk’ and ‘Cornerstone Pregnancy Advice Centre’.

Cornerstone are a group of trained volunteers who offer free, unbiased advice on all pregnancy concerns.

“I’ve seen first hand the important work that ‘For Men To Talk’ are doing in the local community,” said Scott. “When I attended a ‘Walk and Talk’ meeting, I really saw men open up about their mental health, it’s truly inspiring to see”.

“The number of cases involving suicides, especially in St.Neots and the surrounding towns and villages, is very worrying,” said Luke. “We can’t thank Scott and rest of St.Neots Golf Club enough for this amazing amount raised for us. We must try and prevent more people from taking their own lives and with this donation we are in a stronger position to broadcast the message that we will listen to you.”

As part of their physical meetings, ‘For Men To Talk’ launched their monthly St.Neots meetings in a closed room at the St.Neots Golf Club in July 2021.

Husband and father, Luke Newman, from Potton, Bedfordshire, formed ‘For Men To Talk’ in December 2019. They also have physical meetings at The Crown Hotel (Wetherspoon) in Biggleswade, Gamlingay Eco Hub and the Roundabout Club in Sandy. They also have weekly virtual meetings via Zoom and a monthly walking event.

‘For Men To Talk’ welcomed 1438 attendees to 108 meetings in 2022, the meetings will increase to 124 in 2023.
