For Men To Talk is a peer support group. What is peer support?

Peer support is an important aspect of men’s mental health. It is a form of support in which people with similar experiences and challenges come together to share their knowledge, skills and experiences to help each other cope and recover from mental health issues.
One of the main benefits of peer support and ‘For Men To Talk’ is that it can provide a sense of community and belonging for men who may feel isolated and alone in their struggles with mental health. Men are often reluctant to seek help for mental health issues due to societal expectations and stereotypes surrounding masculinity and peer support can help to break down these barriers and create a safe and non-judgmental space for men to discuss their feelings and experiences.
Peer support can also help to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues, as it allows men to see that they are not alone in their struggles and that others have also experienced similar challenges. This can also help to empower men to take control of their mental health and seek help when needed.
Peer support can also provide practical support and advice for men who are dealing with mental health issues. For example, it can help men to learn coping strategies and techniques for managing symptoms, as well as providing information about available resources and services.
In addition, peer support can also help to improve the effectiveness of treatment for men with mental health issues. Research has shown that when people with mental health issues are involved in their own treatment and recovery, they are more likely to have positive outcomes. Peer support can help to provide men with the tools and resources they need to take an active role in their own recovery and treatment.
As well as ‘For Men To Talk’ there are a number of peer support groups and organisations that provide support for men with mental health issues. For example, ‘Andy’s Man Club’ and ‘Walk and Talk For Men’ work to prevent male suicide and provide support for men who are struggling with mental health issues. Other organisations such as Mind and Rethink Mental Illness also provide peer support groups and other resources for men with mental health issues.
