The mistake of removing blocking from X (previously Twitter)

General News, News & Events

Twitter, now known as ‘X’, owner Elon Musk, has announced that users will no longer be able to block other accounts, except for DMs, as he claims that the feature “makes no sense.”

Here at ‘For Men To Talk’ we strongly disagree with his intentions.

We know that in today’s digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives, enabling us to connect, communicate, and share our thoughts with a global audience.

However, along with its benefits, social media also comes with its fair share of challenges, especially when it comes to dealing with negativity, attacks and bullying. For many individuals, particularly men who find themselves targeted and belittled, the option to block people on social media can be a powerful tool for preserving mental well-being and maintaining a positive online environment.

Preserving Mental Health

One of the most crucial aspects of blocking people on social media is safeguarding one’s mental health. Men, like anyone else, can be vulnerable to the harmful effects of cyberbullying, harassment, and personal attacks. Constant exposure to such negativity can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression. Blocking gives individuals the agency to take control of their online spaces, allowing them to curate an environment that fosters positivity and support.

When someone feels attacked and bullied, they often absorb those negative messages. Blocking provides a means to distance oneself from such toxicity, reducing the chances of these damaging messages affecting one’s self-esteem and mental state. By prioritising their mental health, men who feel targeted can take a proactive step towards building resilience and maintaining a strong sense of self-worth.

Fostering a Positive Online Space

Social media platforms, especially ‘X’ are meant to be platforms for sharing ideas, connecting with friends and family, and engaging in meaningful discussions. Unfortunately, these platforms can sometimes devolve into spaces where hate speech, personal attacks, and aggressive behaviour thrive. By choosing to block people who contribute to this negativity, men can help create a more positive online space for themselves and their followers.

When a man blocks someone who has been attacking or bullying them, they not only protect themselves but also send a clear message that such behaviour is not tolerated. This can lead to a ripple effect, encouraging others to stand up against negativity and foster an environment of respect and kindness. By curating a feed that aligns with their values and interests, individuals can engage in more fulfilling online interactions, which can have a positive impact on their overall well-being.

Empowerment and Control

Blocking individuals on social media is an empowering act that puts control back into the hands of those who may feel powerless in the face of online attacks. It allows individuals to set boundaries and decide who has access to their online life. This control over their social media experience can have a profound effect on their confidence and self-assurance.

By making the decision to block someone, men can assert their right to be treated with respect and dignity. It serves as a statement that their online presence is not a playground for hurtful behaviour. This empowerment can extend beyond the digital realm and influence how individuals perceive themselves in the real world, leading to increased self-confidence and a stronger sense of self-identity.

The importance of blocking people on social media for men who feel attacked and bullied cannot be understated. It is a proactive measure to protect mental health, foster positivity, and regain a sense of control and we truly hope that Elon Musk reverses his decision and continues to allow blocking.
