Finding Balance: A journey through work and play
By Luke Newman, Founder of ‘For Men To Talk’
Today, I want to share a bit about my own journey of finding balance between work and play, and how it has significantly impacted my mental health.
As someone deeply immersed in the mental health field with two demanding jobs, I understand the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. For the past 18 days, my schedule has been packed with work commitments, but surprisingly and for a change, I’ve managed to squeeze in some fantastic experiences that have been a breath of fresh air for my soul.
In the midst of my busy schedule, I made time to attend three incredible music concerts – Soul II Soul, the Brand New Heavies and Incognito. The energy, the rhythm, and the joyous atmosphere at these concerts served as a powerful reminder of the importance of letting loose and enjoying the simple pleasures in life. Music has an incredible ability to uplift our spirits and connect us with our emotions, providing a welcome escape from the daily grind.
Additionally, I had the privilege of attending the England vs Malta football game. The camaraderie, the cheers, and the sheer excitement of the match were invigorating. Engaging in sports, whether as a spectator or a participant, is a fantastic way to release pent-up stress and foster a sense of community. It’s crucial to remember that taking time for leisure activities isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for maintaining good mental health.
The idea of ‘For Men To Talk’ was born out of a realisation that men often face unique challenges when it comes to discussing their mental health. Societal expectations and stereotypes can create a barrier for men to open up about their struggles. Through our peer support group, we aim to break down these barriers and create a safe space for men to share their experiences, challenges, and triumphs.
My own experiences have taught me that finding the right balance between work and play is essential for overall well-being and something that I must do more of. The demanding nature of my job in mental health can be emotionally draining, but engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation has been a game-changer. It’s not just about the quantity of hours we put into work, but the quality of the time we invest in ourselves and our passions.
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant hustle and forget to prioritise self-care. I encourage everyone, especially those working in the mental health field, to make a conscious effort to find moments of joy and relaxation. Whether it’s attending a concert, cheering for your favourite team, or simply taking a quiet walk in nature, these moments are vital for recharging our mental and emotional batteries.
As the founder of ‘For Men To Talk,’ I want to emphasise the importance of creating a culture where men feel comfortable expressing their emotions and seeking support when needed. Let’s continue to break the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and work towards a society where well-being is a priority for everyone.
Remember, it’s not just about talking, it’s about finding that balance, embracing life’s joys and taking the necessary steps to ensure our mental health remains a top priority.
