Closing 2023 with camaraderie: ‘For Men To Talk’ gathers in Biggleswade
As the year draws to a close, the ‘For Men To Talk’ men’s peer support group orchestrated a memorable event at The Crown Hotel (Wetherspoon) in Biggleswade on Thursday 28 December 28 2023. This final meeting of the year was a testament to the sense of community and support that has flourished within the group.
Men from various towns and villages, including Biggleswade, Gamlingay, Potton, St Neots, Sandy, and even those who have previously joined virtually, converged at the venue. For some, this was an opportunity to meet face-to-face for the very first time, bridging the gaps that had connected them throughout the year.
The atmosphere was distinctly different from the usual discussions centered around mental health. Instead, the focus shifted to fostering connections through a shared meal and general conversation. Laughter and camaraderie filled the air as attendees swapped stories and experiences, creating a space that transcended the typical support group dynamic.
Reflecting on the gathering, ‘For Men To Talk’ founder Luke Newman expressed his gratitude, stating, “The atmosphere was distinctly different from the usual discussions centered around mental health. Instead, the focus shifted to fostering connections through a shared meal and general conversation. Laughter and camaraderie filled the air as attendees swapped stories and experiences. I look back at immense pride at what I have built over the last four year.”
Luke Newman’s vision for ‘For Men To Talk’ has always been to provide a safe space for men to open up about their struggles and triumphs. The event at The Crown Hotel marked not only the end of the year but also a celebration of the community that has blossomed around the group’s ethos.
The decision to steer away from mental health talk for this particular event proved to be a refreshing change. It allowed attendees to see each other beyond their challenges, fostering an environment where they could simply enjoy each other’s company. This shift in focus showcased the multifaceted nature of the support group, emphasising that it’s not just a forum for addressing struggles but also a place to build friendships.
As the night unfolded, it became evident that ‘For Men To Talk’ had evolved into more than just a support group; it had become a brotherhood. The connections made at this final meeting of 2023 extended beyond the event, laying the foundation for continued support and understanding in the coming year.
It was a celebration of growth, camaraderie, and the realisation that, indeed, something extraordinary had been built. Luke Newman’s journey from envisioning a supportive space to witnessing its tangible impact was encapsulated in his heartfelt words: “Overwhelming to think that I built this!” As the attendees dispersed, the spirit of togetherness lingered, promising a new year filled with shared experiences and strengthened bonds within the ‘For Men To Talk’ community.
