Local restaurant’s raises hundreds for local mens peer support group

General News, News & Events

Cotey’s Restaurant, located just off the Great North Road between Baldock and Biggleswade, has successfully raised £650 to ‘For Men To Talk’ through a series of fundraising events, including a television-based horse racing night.

The family-friendly restaurant, known for its welcoming atmosphere, has brought attention to an important cause, helping men dealing with anxiety, depression, and grief.

Sonia Gunn, Manager of Cotey’s Restaurant, shared her thoughts on why the ‘For Men To Talk’ was chosen for the fundraising efforts: “As we sit on the A1 southbound next to the Redwings Lodge Hotel, we see a lot of contract workers, such as construction workers, visit our restaurant,” said Sonia. “Obviously, they are away from family during the week, and a lot of them are young men. Some are missing their families, and I know that some are really struggling.”

Luke Newman, founder of ‘For Men To Talk’ highlights how male construction workers are particularly vulnerable to mental health struggles, a pressing issue that often goes unnoticed. “Construction is one of the industries with the highest suicide rates. Male construction workers are three times more likely to die by suicide than the average male in the UK.”

Luke expressed his gratitude for Cotey Restaurant’s support. “Common contributing factors include job insecurity, long hours, high-pressure environments, financial instability, and a culture that may discourage talking about mental health. I can’t thank Sonia and the Cotey’s Restaurant team enough for raising such a huge amount for ‘For Men To Talk’ and highlighting our cause.”

The money raised will go towards the various activities and support meetings that ‘For Men To Talk’ organises. They host physical, virtual, walking, and fishing meetings, providing different ways for men to connect and share their experiences. The aim is to create a safe, non-judgmental environment where men can openly talk about their feelings and mental health.

Luke Newman encourages anyone who may be struggling to reach out. Further details about the charity and its services can be found at www.formentotalk.co.uk and through their social media channels. Luke is also available for questions at 07709 446480 or via email at luke@formentotalk.co.uk.
