Reflections on the final ‘For Men To Talk… and Fish’ of the season
Yesterday, I attended our final For Men To Talk… and Fish event for the season. While a few attendees had to cancel last minute, it turned into an unexpected opportunity for me to take my 14-year-old son, Oliver, out to the water. It was his first time ever fishing, and what a special day it became.
The Benefits of Fishing
Fishing isn’t just a sport; it’s an experience. Out on the bank, everything slows down. It allows you to take a break from the busyness of life and enjoy nature’s calm. For many of us, the stillness of the water and the focus needed for fishing act as a natural therapy. There’s a unique satisfaction in casting a line, waiting patiently, and feeling that first tug when a fish bites.
Fishing can help reduce stress and improve mental health, as it lets you unwind and be fully present. It’s also a wonderful way to reflect. As part of For Men To Talk, these fishing sessions have provided a space for men to let go of stress and enjoy simple, shared moments that support their well-being.
Father and Son Bonding
Bringing Oliver along gave us a chance to bond in a new way. In today’s busy world, father-son time can be hard to find. Taking him fishing opened a door for us to connect without distractions. Fishing taught him patience, focus, and the joy of simply enjoying each other’s company.
As Oliver and I waited for the fish to bite, we could talk or sit in silence without any pressure. These moments helped us grow closer and created memories I know we’ll both treasure. Fishing together became a way to teach him the importance of taking breaks and valuing mental well-being.
A Look Back at ‘For Men To Talk… and Fish’ in 2024
Looking back at our For Men To Talk… and Fish sessions this year, I feel grateful. Each session has brought new faces and deepened the bonds within our group. This year, we held nine sessions, with men joining to relax, share, and sometimes just listen. Fishing became more than a hobby; it was a way to build trust and give each other space to open up in a comfortable setting.
At each event, we saw different levels of experience—from seasoned anglers to those holding a rod for the first time. This mix created a friendly, supportive environment where everyone could feel welcome. The sessions were all about letting go of stress, finding joy in a simple activity, and connecting over shared experiences. Whether people were catching fish or just soaking up the calm, every meeting had a positive impact.
Looking Ahead to 2025
After such a successful season, we’re looking forward to expanding For Men To Talk… and Fish in 2025. We’ll plan more sessions, giving more men the chance to experience the benefits of fishing for their mental health, to build connections, share stories, and unwind together.
Thank you to everyone who joined us this season. Let’s look forward to more calm days, meaningful conversations, and peaceful moments by the water in 2025.
