Stay healthy this winter: Flu and COVID-19 vaccinations

General News, News & Events

Winter can be tough on our health, but there are steps you can take to stay well. One of the most important is getting your flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. These vaccines help protect you and those around you from serious illness.

Why Vaccinations Are Important

If you’re eligible, getting your flu and COVID-19 jabs every year is vital. Vaccinations refresh your protection and lower the risk of severe symptoms if you catch the virus.

Who Can Get the Flu and COVID-19 Vaccines?

You can receive both vaccines for free through the NHS if you:

  • Are 65 or older (including those turning 65 by March 31, 2025).
  • Have certain long-term health conditions.
  • Are pregnant.
  • Live in a care home for older adults.

Carers, people living with someone with a weak immune system, and other care home residents can also get the flu vaccine.

Children aged 2 or 3, as well as school-aged children (Reception to Year 11), can receive a children’s flu vaccine.

Frontline health and social care workers are also eligible for both vaccines.

Getting the Flu Vaccine

If you’re eligible, there are several ways to book your NHS flu vaccination:

  1. Online or through the NHS App: Book your appointment at a pharmacy.
  2. Find a Pharmacy: Use the NHS website to locate a pharmacy offering free flu vaccines.
  3. GP Surgery: Contact your doctor’s office to schedule your vaccination.

Some people, like care home residents or pregnant women, might get their vaccine through their care home or maternity service.

For children aged 2 or 3, the vaccine is available at their GP surgery. School-aged children will receive theirs at school or a local clinic.

Getting the COVID-19 Vaccine

Eligible individuals can also book their winter COVID-19 vaccination in several ways:

  1. Online or through the NHS App: Make an appointment quickly and easily.
  2. Walk-In Sites: Find a nearby vaccination site without needing an appointment.

Vaccines may also be available at your GP surgery, local pharmacy, or care home for residents.

Protect Yourself and Others

Winter illnesses can spread quickly, but vaccines offer strong protection. Whether you’re older, have health conditions, or care for someone vulnerable, these simple steps can make a big difference.
