Music and Poetry: Helping men open up about mental health

General News, News & Events

From January 2025, ‘For Men To Talk’ will launch a new way to support men’s mental health. For two years, we will post a weekly poem inspired by the song titles of favourite musical artists and bands. This project combines the power of poetry and music to help men share feelings and find comfort.

How Can Poetry Help Men’s Mental Health?

Poetry is a simple yet powerful way to express emotions. For many men, opening up about mental health can feel overwhelming or even impossible. Poetry allows them to put feelings into words without needing long conversations.

Through a few lines, a poem can reflect sadness, hope, or struggle. It can help men recognise their emotions and feel less alone. Reading or writing poetry can also spark conversations. Men can say, “This poem speaks to me,” when they struggle to explain their feelings in other ways.

By using song titles for inspiration, the poems will connect men to familiar music while helping them explore their thoughts and feelings.

How Can Music Help Men’s Mental Health?

Music is a universal language. It moves people, brings back memories, and connects us to our emotions. For men struggling with anxiety, depression, or grief, music can be a powerful tool.

A favourite song can provide comfort or strength during tough times. Lyrics can express feelings men may not be ready to say out loud. Listening to music can calm the mind, improve mood, and even reduce stress.

Music also connects people. Sharing songs or artists can build friendships. For men in groups like ‘For Men To Talk’, music can be an easy starting point for conversation and bonding.

What is ‘For Men To Talk’?

‘For Men To Talk’ is a peer support group for men struggling with mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, and grief. It’s a safe place where men can share their feelings and stories without fear of judgment.

The group offers different ways for men to connect:

  • Physical Meetings: In-person discussions in a welcoming space.
  • Walking Meetings: Gentle exercise while talking, perfect for those who feel more comfortable outdoors.
  • Virtual Meetings: Online sessions for men who cannot attend in person.
  • Fishing Events: Quiet time by the water, offering peace and reflection alongside meaningful conversations.

‘For Men To Talk’ is about building connections and breaking the stigma around men’s mental health.

The Power of Sharing

The weekly poetry project will celebrate music and show men that emotions are okay. It will encourage reflection and conversation. Whether through poetry, music, or talking, ‘For Men To Talk’ is here to help men take the first step toward healing.

If you or someone you know is struggling, join one of our meetings. You are not alone, and we’re here to listen. Together, we can make a difference.
