Walking and Talking: ‘For Men To Talk’ in Hitchin in 2025

General News, Hitchin, Meetings, News & Events, Walking

In 2025, ‘For Men To Talk’ will continue its popular walking meetings, offering men a chance to support each other while exploring the historic streets of Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Starting at St Mary’s Church, opposite the beautifully restored Sir Ian Dixon Memorial Fountain, these meetings are set to take place twice a month.

Luke Newman, founder of ‘For Men To Talk,’ shares the importance of these gatherings:
“Walking together breaks down barriers. Men often find it easier to talk side by side rather than face to face. These walks give us a space to connect, support each other, and find comfort in shared experiences.”

A Historic Starting Point

The walking meetings begin at St Mary’s Church, a site rich in history. The church traces its origins back to 792 AD when King Offa of Mercia founded a Benedictine monastery here. Over the centuries, the site has witnessed destruction by fire, a ‘great wind,’ and even an earthquake.

The current church, mostly dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, boasts stunning architecture, including intricate roofs and carvings. Originally dedicated to St Andrew, it became known as The Church of St Mary due to the influence of the Guild of Our Lady in the 15th century.

Opposite the church stands the Sir Ian Dixon Memorial Fountain. Dedicated to a key figure in the construction industry, the fountain underwent renovation in late 2024, funded by the Hitchin Business Improvement District. This restored landmark is a fitting place to gather for reflection and conversation.

The Power of Walking Meetings

‘For Men To Talk’ walking meetings provide a unique way for men to open up about mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and grief. Walking in a group helps create a sense of community while reducing the pressure to speak immediately or directly. The natural flow of conversation often emerges effortlessly while strolling.

Luke Newman explains:
“These meetings are not just about walking. They’re about sharing and listening. Each step taken is a step toward healing and understanding.”
