On Friday 21 February 2025, something special is happening in Hitchin. Alistair Strathern, Labour MP for Hitchin, will join the ‘For Men To Talk…and Walk – Hitchin’ meeting to here from the attendees about the importance of men’s mental health and the impact of this incredible group. The walk starts at 6pm at St Mary’s Church, Hitchin, right by the Sir Ian Dixon Memorial Fountain.

This event is not just a walk—it’s a space where men can come together, talk, and support one another. It’s a chance to break down the stigma around mental health and remind men that they don’t have to face anxiety, depression, or grief alone.

Luke Newman, the founder of ‘For Men To Talk,’ will also be attending the event. He shared his thoughts ahead of the walk:
“Over the past five years, we’ve seen the difference a simple conversation can make. Men often carry their struggles in silence, but when they open up to others who understand, it changes everything. I’m proud to see the Hitchin group thriving, and I look forward to welcoming Alistair Strathern to the walk.”

One Year of ‘For Men To Talk…and Walk – Hitchin’

This event comes just weeks after the Hitchin group celebrated its one-year anniversary on 3 January 2025. Over the past year, the group has created a safe and supportive environment where men can walk, talk, and share their experiences.

The Hitchin walk is just one part of the wider ‘For Men To Talk’ initiative. For more than five years, the group has offered a variety of peer support meetings in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, and Hampshire. These include in-person discussions, walking groups, virtual meetings, and even fishing meetings. Each activity provides men with a comfortable space to connect with others facing similar challenges.

Why Peer Support Matters

Many men struggle to talk about their mental health, often feeling pressure to appear strong or keep their emotions hidden. ‘For Men To Talk’ exists to change that. The group creates an environment where men feel safe to open up, listen, and offer support to one another.

Luke explains why this work is so vital:
“Men don’t have to face mental health challenges alone. Sharing their stories with others who truly understand can lift a huge weight off their shoulders. Our meetings prove that talking really does help.”
