Child to Parent Abuse: Supporting Parents and Professionals

Child to Parent Abuse (CPA) is a serious issue that doesn’t get enough attention. Parents experiencing CPA often feel scared, ashamed, or helpless. PEGS (Parental Education Growth Support) is working to change this by supporting families, training professionals, and influencing policies to reduce CPA’s impact.
What is CPA? CPA happens when a child shows harmful, abusive, or controlling behaviour towards their parent or carer. This can include physical violence, emotional abuse, financial control, or damage to property. It’s a hidden issue, as many parents feel too embarrassed to talk about it. But staying silent can make the problem worse.
How PEGS Helps PEGS supports parents by giving them the tools, advice, and confidence to manage these challenges. They also train frontline workers—such as teachers, social workers, and healthcare professionals—so they can spot the signs of CPA and provide the right support.
Raising awareness is another focus for PEGS. They want more people to understand what CPA is and how it affects families. By working with policymakers, PEGS aims to make sure that CPA is properly addressed in laws and services.
Luke Newman, Founder of ‘For Men To Talk’, says: “Parents need to know they’re not alone. Getting support early can make all the difference.”
