The power of sportsmen speaking about men’s mental health

This week on WWE Smackdown, wrestler LA Knight took a moment before his match to speak about something bigger than wrestling—men’s mental health.
Looking directly into the camera, he shared a powerful message:
“Let me just say this, in my life, in my career, I want to be somebody who effects good change before I die. So I’m going to speak to all the men, all the boys… I mean this from the bottom of my heart, if something arises in your life that hits you in the feels and you have to cry, let it out. It’s good for your mental health, it doesn’t make you any less of a man.”
Knight’s words are important. For too long, men have been told to “man up” and hide their emotions. But real strength comes from being open, honest, and willing to talk.
The Importance of Role Models in Sport
When well-known sportsmen speak out, it encourages others to do the same. Athletes and wrestlers like LA Knight have millions of fans. Their words can reach men who may be struggling but don’t know where to turn.
Sports culture has often promoted toughness and silence over emotions. But things are changing. More and more sportsmen are using their platform to promote mental health awareness, showing that it’s okay to struggle and, most importantly, okay to talk about it.

“Men need to see others talking about mental health to know it’s okay. When sportsmen speak up, they break the stigma and inspire others to reach out for support.”
