Alistair Strathern MP Joins ‘For Men To Talk…and Walk – Hitchin’

On 21 February 2025, Alistair Strathern, the Labour MP for Hitchin, joined attendees of ‘For Men To Talk…and Walk – Hitchin’ to discuss the importance of men’s mental health. He spoke with Luke Newman, the founder of ‘For Men To Talk,’ about the impact of peer support groups.
During their conversation, Alistair and Luke agreed that although many men’s support groups exist, the male suicide rate is still rising. It is now the highest it has been since 1999. This highlights why groups like ‘For Men To Talk’ are so important.
For over five years, ‘For Men To Talk’ has provided support through physical meetings, walking groups, virtual sessions, and fishing events. These take place in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, and Hampshire. The aim is to continue expanding so more men can find the help they need.
Luke explained that ‘For Men To Talk’ is a safe space for men dealing with anxiety, depression, and grief. The group allows them to speak openly with others who understand what they are going through.
Luke also shared the reasons behind starting the group in December 2019 and how it has grown. “Men need a place where they can feel comfortable talking about their struggles. ‘For Men To Talk’ gives them that opportunity. It’s not just about talking; it’s about listening and knowing you’re not alone.”
The Hitchin walking group recently celebrated its first anniversary on 3 January 2025. Led my facilitator, Kenny, these walks take place every two months, offering a chance for men to meet, talk, and support each other while being active.
