Fishing for well-being: The first ‘For Men To Talk…and Fish’ of 2025 is a huge success

The first ‘For Men To Talk…and Fish’ session of 2025 took place on 15 March at Manor Farm Lakes in Lower Caldecote, Bedfordshire, and it was a great success. It was the first of 12 fishing meetings planned for the year, offering men a chance to connect, talk, and enjoy the calming effects of being by the water.
Luke Newman, founder of ‘For Men To Talk,’ said:
“Fishing gives men a break from everyday stress. It’s not just about catching fish—it’s about being in nature, switching off from worries, and finding peace.”
The Mental Health Benefits of Fishing
Fishing is more than just a hobby. It helps men step away from their busy lives and relax. The slow, steady process of fishing—casting a line, waiting, and focusing on the water—can be very calming. It helps lower stress and gives men time to clear their minds.
Spending time outdoors is also important for mental health. Being in nature can improve mood, reduce anxiety, and boost overall well-being. Fishing provides a chance to breathe fresh air, enjoy quiet moments, and feel a sense of achievement.
Finding a New Passion
One attendee returned this year after joining the fishing sessions in 2024 and it has become a passion. Fishing helps him get out of the house and away from screens, giving him a much-needed break from technology.
He shared: “Before I started fishing, I spent too much time indoors. Now, I look forward to these sessions. It’s not just about fishing—it’s about being around others who understand what I’m going through.”
A Safe Space for Men to Talk
‘For Men To Talk’ is a support group for men dealing with anxiety, depression, and grief. The fishing meetings give men a chance to talk openly with others who understand. Whether they share their struggles or simply enjoy the quiet company of others, they are never alone.
