Celebrating 6 Years of ‘For Men To Talk’ at The Bigg Theatre, with thanks to Preen

Biggleswade, General News, Meetings, News & Events

On Saturday 10 January 2026, from 6pm, ‘For Men To Talk’ will celebrate its 6 year anniversary with a special event. The evening will look back at the last six years, explore why the group was founded, and share plans for 2026 and beyond.

The event is free to attend and is open to everyone – not just men, but also women. A ticket is required, and guests will be treated to one free hot drink and one piece of cake, kindly provided by Preen Community Interest Company, who serve the local community around Biggleswade.

‘For Men To Talk’ was set up to give men a safe and comfortable place to talk. It is a peer support group for men living with mental health illnesses such as anxiety, depression, and grief. The group helps men realise they are not alone and that talking can make a real difference.

Founder Luke Newman said: “’For Men To Talk’ started because I saw how many men were struggling in silence. Six years on, I am incredibly proud of how many lives have been touched simply by giving people the space to talk and be heard.”

The work of ‘For Men To Talk’ is more important than ever. Recent data shows that someone in the UK takes their own life every 90 minutes, and one in four people have had suicidal thoughts. In 2024, there were 6,190 suicides registered in England and Wales, with 4,599 of these being male. The suicide rate for men remains much higher than for women, especially for men aged 50 to 54, where the rate is the highest.

Over the past six years, ‘For Men To Talk’ has continued to grow. The group now offers physical, virtual, walking, and fishing meetings across many towns, including Ampthill, Biggleswade, Bedford, Potton, Shefford, Sandy, St Neots, Hitchin, and even as far as Stockport. This growth shows the need for safe spaces where people can talk openly about how they feel.

The anniversary event is also a thanks to Preen Community Interest Company. Preen is a social enterprise that provides furniture, electrical goods, and other practical household items to people in need. Priority is given to vulnerable groups such as people on benefits, disabled people, pensioners, ex-offenders, and students. In just the last week, Preen has fully furnished five homes for vulnerable families, providing beds, mattresses, appliances, sofas, bedding, and kitchen items to help people start again.

The 6 year anniversary event is a chance to celebrate, reflect, and look forward with hope. It is about community, kindness, and the power of talking.
