Men’s Health Event is in Ampthill a huge success

The Men’s Health Event held in Ampthill on Friday 6th February 2026 has been described as a huge success, bringing together local men, families, professionals and organisations for a powerful and positive morning focused on wellbeing.
Hosted by Ampthill Town Councillor Stephen Addy, supported by Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire and ‘For Men To Talk’, the event took place at Parkside Hall. The atmosphere throughout the day was open, supportive and welcoming, with many men taking the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and find out what help is available locally. A free lunch was also provided, giving people time to connect and continue conversations in an informal way.
One of the highlights of the event was the busy marketplace of local organisations. Stallholders included Carers in Bedfordshire, Bedfordshire NHS Foundation Trust Diabetes Education Team, Samaritans, Everyone Active, IMPAKT, Good Life Sorted, Parallel Lives, the Chrysalis Centre and Phil Carless, Anxiety Breakthrough Coach. Attendees were able to speak directly with these services, pick up information and gain reassurance about accessing support for both physical and mental health.
The speaker programme was a key part of the day and was very well received. Luke Newman, founder and CEO of ‘For Men To Talk’, shared why the group was founded and explained the range of meetings available, including physical, virtual, walking and fishing sessions. He said, “For Men To Talk was created to give men a simple, safe space to open up about how they are really feeling. Seeing so many men engage today shows just how important it is to keep creating these opportunities.”
Dave Bateson, founder of Ampthill vs Cancer, spoke honestly about his cancer journey and how it inspired him to become a prolific fundraiser. His talk resonated strongly with the audience and highlighted the power of community support. Tony McCool, former professional footballer and business owner, shared his story of loss while caring for his wife with a very rare illness, and how he has worked to rebuild his life and plan for the future.
Claire Young delivered an inspiring talk on resilience, reflecting on how unexpected events can change us and why aligning daily choices with who we have become is so important. Dr Alison Rimmer from Lea Vale Medical Practice provided clear and practical information on cardiovascular health, hypertension and cholesterol, supported by the practice nurse who attended to offer guidance. Neil Waring from YouTurn Futures explained how the organisation supports men’s mental health, recovery and local wellbeing.
Feedback from attendees has been extremely positive, with many describing the event as informative, reassuring and encouraging. Several men said the day helped them feel less alone and more confident about taking steps to look after their health.
A massive thank you goes to the event sponsors, Ampthill Fireplaces and The Social, whose support helped make the day possible. Thanks are also extended to all speakers, stallholders and partners who contributed their time and expertise.
The success of this event shows just how valuable it is to bring men’s health conversations into the community and make support visible, accessible and normal.
